How will the delay in the conduct of Class 12th exams by CBSE, ICSE, and other state boards affect JEE, NEET? Read on to know

The decision to postpone CBSE Class 12th exams is likely to have a cascading effect on admissions to engineering and medical programmes this year. While Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) plans to review the COVID19 situation on June 1 to decide the new exam dates, students are worried about JEE (Advanced) for admissions to IITs and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical exams. They fear that these exams may be pushed further too.

Last year too, the JEE (Main), JEE (Advanced) and NEET dates were deferred due to pandemic and were held in September. With academic sessions beginning late last year, this year’s entrance exams have already been affected. JEE (Advanced) 2021 is scheduled on July 3, while NEET is on August 1. With the Centre’s decision to postpone Class 12th board exams by over a month, it is highly likely that these entrance exams will be pushed further, leading to a delayed start to the academic session this year too.

According to a survey conducted by Shiksha.com on cancellation of Class 12th exams, students are asking Boards to conduct their exams online so that the competitive exams do not get delayed further.

A parent, on the condition of anonymity, said that last year the board exams were nearly over at the time of national lockdown. This year, the Class 12th boards are yet to be conducted. There is uncertainty on whether the exams will be held or when the results will be announced. The CBSE stated that students will be given 15 days prior to the commencement of exams, which will further delay the conduct of competitive exams.

An IIT official said the Covid19 situation is unpredictable. “The surge in cases has happened over a period of only three weeks. We do not know how things will pan out in June. We will have to monitor the situation before making a decision.” CBSE Class 12th board exam, if scheduled in June, may clash with the current schedule of JEE (Advanced) on July 3.

There is no announcement yet on the third phase of JEE (Main) scheduled in the last week of April. A parent said the National Testing Agency (NTA) may hold the exam as per schedule as students are anyway getting multiple attempts.

CBSE has announced that it will release the CBSE 10th result by June 20.
