The Directorate of Education has reminded schools to maintain all other safety measures and hygienic practices consistently. District and zone-level deputy directors have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance with these guidelines across all educational institutions.

Delhi School Guidelines: As temperatures soar across the city, the Directorate of Education (DoE) in Delhi has issued new guidelines to safeguard students from the blistering heat. The updated directives aim to protect children from the adverse effects of extreme heat, emphasizing measures to maintain a safe and comfortable environment within schools.

Avoidance of Afternoon Assemblies and Outdoor Classes

One of the key directives includes the suspension of student assemblies during the afternoon shifts to minimize exposure to the intense afternoon sun. Additionally, the DoE has made it clear that "no classes shall be conducted in open-air environments" to ensure students are shielded from the harsh midday sun. All outdoor activities, including sports and other extracurricular engagements, have been prohibited until the weather improves.

Hydration Emphasized in Schools

The importance of staying hydrated has been highlighted as a top priority in the guidelines. Schools are instructed to maintain an adequate supply of clean drinking water at all times, with RO systems and water coolers checked and kept in working order. Scheduled water breaks have been incorporated into the daily routine to encourage students to drink water regularly, reducing the risk of dehydration.

Ensuring Cool Indoor Environments

To help students stay comfortable indoors, schools have been directed to ensure that classrooms are properly ventilated and equipped with functional fans. The measures aim to create a cooler environment that will help mitigate the effects of the heat. Additionally, fire safety is given special attention, with the directive mandating the installation of functional fire extinguishers in all school corridors.

Sun Protection Guidelines for Students

To protect students from the harmful effects of direct sun exposure, the guidelines stress the importance of head protection. Students are urged to use umbrellas, hats, caps, towels, or any other form of headgear when commuting to and from school. The circular also prohibits anyone—whether students, parents, or staff—from staying or sitting in open, exposed areas under direct sunlight.

Health Preparedness and Immediate Response to Heat-Related Illnesses

Health preparedness is a central focus of the guidelines. The circular stresses the need for immediate attention to any cases of heat-related illnesses. Schools are required to keep first aid kits with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) on hand for students showing symptoms of heat stress. Any serious cases should be reported to the nearest healthcare facility or hospital for prompt treatment.

Ensuring Consistent Safety Measures

The Directorate of Education has reminded schools to maintain all other safety measures and hygienic practices consistently. District and zone-level deputy directors have been tasked with ensuring strict compliance with these guidelines across all educational institutions.
