CBI registers FIR in Thanjavur student suicide case
A Class 12 student in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur attempted to end her life after being forced to convert to Christianity.
Thanjavur Student Suicide Case: According to the latest update Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has decided to take over the Thanjavur student suicide case as the bureau has registered an FIR. According to ANI, “CBI registers FIR in Thanjavur student suicide case. The case pertains to the death of a 17-year old student of a Christian Missionary School in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district who was allegedly being forced to convert to Christianity by her school.”
The case is regarding a Class 12 student in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur, who attempted to end her life after being forced to convert to Christianity. Reports suggest that she did not respond to treatment by doctors and died in Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on January 19, 2022.
The 17-year-old girl was in a boarding house called St Michael's Girls' Home in Thanjavur. A video also came to light in which the girl confessed that she was constantly scolded and also made to clean all the rooms in the hostel by the hostel warden. The girl alleged that she was also constantly forced to take up Christianity. Disturbed by these incidents, the girl consumed pesticide in an attempt to kill herself.
Police interrogation revealed that the boarding school warden had harassed the girl and forced her to convert to Christianity.
So far, the warden of the missionary school hostel has been arrested and a case registered under IPC section 305 (abetment of suicide of child) and sections 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) and 82 (1) (indulging in corporal punishment with the aim of disciplining a child) of the Juvenile Justice Act.
