Baldev Setia appointed new director of PEC Chandigarh

Former PEC Director Dheeraj Sanghi had resigned from the post in December last year, citing personal reasons. He served till March 31, 2021. He had joined PEC from IIT Kanpur in January 2019 and his term was to end in January 2024. 

Baldev Setia has been appointed the new director of Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh. The new PEC director, Baldev Setia, has been serving as a professor in the civil engineering department of the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, since 2006. He has more than 35 years of experience in teaching, research, consultancy and administration.  

He has been appointed by Chandigarh administrator VP Singh Badnore on the recommendations of search-cum-selection panel. The panel had shortlisted three names for the post of PEC Director and a total of 36 candidates were interviewed for the post. 

A graduate in civil engineering and a postgraduate in water resources engineering, he completed his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, in 1998. 

Established in 1921, PEC is an open institution which majorly focuses in the field of engineering, applied sciences and technology. Earlier, the institute was named as PEC University of Technology, then it was named as East Punjab Engineering College and later on, it was renamed as Maclean Engineering College. After gaining the deemed university status in 2003, the institute was given its current name. Deemed university, or deemed to be university, is a status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of the UGC Act.
