DU Semester Exams 2023 begins, first-year economics exam witnesses good up in marks
Meanwhile, the first-semester four-year undergraduate programme students who appeared for the introductory mathematics exam received a question paper from outside the syllabus of 75 marks. The scheme of internal assessment, practicals and exams was notified almost at the end of the semester.
First-year economics students of Delhi University were left in shock when they appeared for an exam that they thought was for 90 marks but turned out to be for 75 marks. From this year onwards, the question paper format has changed having a weightage of 90 marks, unlike 75 marks last year.
Meanwhile, the first-semester four-year undergraduate programme students who appeared for the introductory mathematics exam received a question paper from outside the syllabus of 75 marks. The scheme of internal assessment, practicals and exams was notified almost at the end of the semester. On several accounts, teachers had also raised objections to these changes. The total marks for a subject are 160.
"We had just a few months with several changes introduced at the end. There were several application-based questions, which were difficult. The paper was of 75 marks instead of the already notified 90 marks. Now, we don't know how the marks will be calculated. We had to study seven subjects in such a small semester. All of us are disappointed," said an economics student at Ramjas College, as reported by TOI.
Another student said, "The concepts taught to us were different from what came for the exam, which were not of the introductory level. All of us were in shock when we saw that the paper was of 75 marks and not 90 marks." Some teachers said "the exam department may have picked up old papers and given them to the students."
"How can the examination department let such a thing happen? There are paper-setters, moderators, and provisions for checks and balances. This batch of students has gone through a lot already. For a question that is of 5 marks, students will write less than what they would write for 10 marks. The university will now have to figure out ways to correct this," said an economics teacher.
Dean (examination) DS Rawat, said, "In such occasions, the marks will be re-appropriated. The paper-setters must have not kept in mind the new scheme of things."
