Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has given nod to create a Tamil Chair in the name of Subramania Bharathiyar at the Banaras Hindu University. The minister was speaking at the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration organised at the Gandhigram Rural Institute.

Union Minister L Murugan, in his speech, recalled the role of freedom fighters in southern Tamil Nadu. He also listed schemes implemented by the Centre for women empowerment. Chancellor KM Annamalai elaborated the achievements of Gandhigram Rural Institute.
Meanwhile, the Education Minister while attending the 36th Convocation of Sastra University in Thanjavur said "the magnificent temples of Tamil Nadu are wonders of the world as well as reminders of the fact that India was the cradle of civilisation. Tamil Nadu is also a land blessed with great knowledge diversity and the motto ‘Think Merit, Think Transparency’ furthers this legacy."
"We have inherited a great civilisational legacy from our greats like, Charaka, Sushruta, Aryabhatta, Bhaskaracharya, Nagarjuna and Thiruvalluvar. Indian Knowledge Systems today have become more relevant than ever, especially in providing solutions to current global challenges," he added.
