IIT Kanpur, AIT Thailand to offer dual doctoral degree programme

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has collaborated with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and has jointly launched its dual doctoral degree programme (DDDP). The program was launched over a virtual ceremony. As per the memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed in 2021, four students are already enrolled in to the programme and joined the launch.

Hosted by Nitin Tripathi, AIT director of special degree programme, the launch was attended by Eden Woon, AIT President, Abhay Karandikar, Director - IIT Kanpur, Yogesh Joshi, dean of International relations at IIT Kanpur, and Bharat Lohani, an IIT Kanpur professor who also gave a special lecture on LiDAR technology. The ceremony was moderated by Chitrini Mozumder, the AIT-affiliated faculty member.

AIT, IIT Kanpur dual degree programme

The beginning of the dual degree programmes offers a preview of the two institutions’ academic strengths and more possible collaborations. The programme offers a chance to students to benefit from the expertise and research facilities of both institutions. Students have the choice to choose from any of the academic programme available at AIT and IIT and they will be awarded two separate doctoral degrees for one thesis completed.

It must be noted that by studying at AIT in Thailand for four semesters and at IIT Kanpur in India for three semesters, their three semesters fees will be waived by the host and partner institution.

Students will also receive bursaries from partner institutions to take care of their boarding and lodging costs. AIT charges the fee for only four semesters. Students may also take an on-campus research assistantship in AIT to cover some expenses as well. The programme is one of its kind initiated by AIT and is aimed to fill the huge gap of human resources with doctoral degrees in many Asian countries.
