The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is all set to welcome first-year students who had taken admission in the 2020-21 academic session. The institute will be welcoming the students for the first time this summer. They have not been able to attend in-person classes due to the coronavirus outbreak. Along with the first-year students, some final-year students will also be called back.

โ€œThe first-year UG pupils will be among the first set of students who, along with some final-year candidates, will be called back in Kharagpur for in-person classes,โ€ said Tamal Nath, the registrar of the institute. He added that the final year students will be allowed to return to attend the pending laboratory lessons.

V K Tewari, Director, IIT Kharagpur, informed that at present the institute has 400 research scholars on campus who were quarantined on their return.

โ€œWe have plans to bring back more students. The matter was recently discussed with the student senate. We have slowly started the activities at the Gymkhana and are doing the needful to gear up to resume sporting activities. By May-June, we hope to call back the final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students so that they are able to complete their lab classes. By July, we hope to recall 50%-60% of the students with due consideration to the SOPs and quarantine protocols,โ€ Tewari said.

Senior administrative officials of IIT-Kharagpur pointed out that the institute had planned to invite students back to the campus when the COVID-19 situation was seemingly looking better for the country.
