In October last year, the JMI's Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar said that the medical college is an important requirement for the South East Delhi neighborhood and will prove helpful for medical aspirants who are living in the adjoining areas. Jamia Millia Islamia to get medical college soon, Centre ask varsity to submit details

The Centre has asked the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) to submit the details of the expenditure, projection of the students and faculty strength for the medical college established in the varsity. In October last year, the JMI's Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar said that the medical college is an important requirement for the South East Delhi neighborhood and will prove helpful for medical aspirants who are living in the adjoining areas.

While acknowledging the proposal, the Ministry of Education, Subhas Sarkar, informed the Lok Sabha that “A letter of intent has been received from Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) for the establishment of a Medical College." The Ministry has now asked the varsity to submit a basic concept consisting of all details of expenditure, projection of the students and faculty strength and the requirements of regulatory approvals in order to assess the matter holistically.

While replying to a question raised in Lok Sabha that whether the government is encouraging the institutions that are performing well in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the minister said, “In order to incentivise the institutions performing well in the India Rankings conducted by the education ministry, schemes like STARS (Scheme for Transformational and Advanced Research and Sciences) and PMRF (Prime Minister’s Research Fellows) has included NIRF ranking as one of the eligibility criteria for identification of institutions.”
