JNU Graffiti Row: JNUSU condemns acts of Vandalism on campus, demands strict action
"The JNUSU strongly condemns any such acts that purposefully attacks any community to encourage any form of disharmony or disturbance of the peaceful environment of the campus," it said in a statement.
After Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus walls were found defaced with slogans against the upper-class community, the JNU Student Union (JNUSU) has now condemned the attack. "The JNUSU strongly condemns any such acts that purposefully attacks any community to encourage any form of disharmony or disturbance of the peaceful environment of the campus," it said in a statement.
JNUSU has also urged the college administration to take ognisance of such slogans and take the requisite strict action according to the statutes of the university. "This is not the first time that these acts have been committed in JNU. Earlier this year the statement " Muslim Lives Don't Matter" was written by unknown persons across JNU walls. Such statements are clearly meant to disturb the normalcy of the campus by vitiating the campus environment. This is not the first time that such vandalism has occurred within the university. Several instances have happened during previous years," the statement added.
"It must be further noted that it is only a certain group within the campus that has repeatedly attempted to vitiate the campus environment, either through such condemnable stunts or through outright violence, in order to maintain an atmosphere of insecurity on the campus. Further, it must also be noted that the progressive student movement of JNU has never defined social justice as contingent upon the outright expulsion of any particular group from society," JNUSU said in a statement.
Earlier, students had claimed that the School of Language,Literature and Cultural Studies-II and School of International Studies-II were defaced with such slogans. A section of students accused the Left of defacing the walls.
Meanwhile, JNUSU has claimed that it is the right wing forces that have tried historically to caricature claims to social justice in such a deplorable manner, with the exclusionary CAA-NRC-NPR being the latest of their attempts at so-called justice. "The JNUSU reiterates it's strong condemnation of the present and past acts of vandalism and urges the JNU Administration to conduct a time bound free and fair enquiry to ensure peace and normalcy on the campus," the statement added.
