JNU withdraws new misconduct rules stipulating fine up to INR 50,000

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has withdrawn the rules it had laid down earlier stating that students will face a fine of INR 50,000 for physical violence, abuse and holding dharna on campus.

As per the 10-page document, 'Rules of Discipline and proper conduct of students of JNU' released by the university today, there would be punishments for acts like protests and forgery, and procedures for proctorial inquiry and recording a statement. The punishment ranged from a fine of INR 5,000 to INR 50,000 or rustication and cancellation of admission.

However, after receiving massive backlash from the students, the rules are now been withdrawn. The students rejected it terming the new JNU rules as 'authoritarian' and 'draconian'.  Such rules applied to students of the university, including part-time students whether admitted before the commencement of these rules or after, the document stated.

"I was not aware of such a circular. I am in Hubli for an international conference. The chief proctor did not consult me before releasing the document. I was not aware that such a document is being drafted. I got to know about the document through newspapers. That is why, I have withdrawn it," JNU, vice chancellor, Santishree D Pandit said as reported by NDTV.

“The JNU Administration should ensure that the repeated offenders and culprits who have been identified should be immediately punished,” the students’ body added back then.
