Madras University Admissions 2021: The University of Madras on June 26, 2021, commenced the admissions application process under fthe ree education scheme for poor students to pursue undergraduate (UG) degree courses in its affiliated colleges in the 2021-22 academic year. According to the scheme, the affiliated colleges, both aided and self-financing colleges have decided to offer free education to two students each. Madras University commenced the enrolment of such students under this scheme from 2010-11.

Candidates interested in Madras University Admissions 2021 free education scheme must note that the online applications form and details of the scheme will be available on the university's website www.unom.ac.in from June 28. The last date for uploading an application with all necessary documents on the website is 15 days from the publication of Class XII results. The university said it would accept only online applications this year considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation.

"Preference will be given to economically backward students, orphans, children of widows and also to the first graduates of the family. The annual income of the family seeking admission under the free education scheme should not exceed Rs 3 lakh," an official release from Madras University registrar N Mathivanan said.

Meanwhile, Madras University on June 25, 2021, announced the discontinuation of the MPhil degree in university departments, affiliated colleges and research institutions from 2021-22 academic year. According to the reports, the pre-research degree lost its attraction among students after the University Grants Commission (UGC) made PhDNET and SLET as minimum qualifications for the appointment of faculty members in colleges and universities. The degree was only used as a preparatory course for a PhD degree.
