Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has come under the limelight for instructing students during exams to write an essay on women as an 'aphrodisiac'. The question paper dated June 15 was meant for fourth-year Bachelor's of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) students.
On Thursday, the question paper went viral after a Twitter user posted a picture of the paper, wherein students were asked to write a short essay on 'Stree as a Vajikarana Dravya'. Meanwhile, the University maintained that the paper was formed according to the syllabus which the Central Council is setting for Indian Medicine had set up, which is something they are not changing.
As per the parts of the textbook posted on the social media site that dictates the answer, the textbook prescribed also puts down guidelines for the ideal female for sexual acts and also states female is considered as best among aphrodisiac drugs as mentioned in Ayurveda.
The issue came to the limelight after the netizens not only lashed out at the university for the question but also questioned why the topics are included in the syllabus and textbook as prescribed by the Centre. A member of the National Commission for Indian System Of Medicine (NCISM), which is in charge of framing the syllabus, said the issue was due to a lack of nuance and contextual cues.
‘Vajikarana’ or ‘Vrishya chikitsa’ is among specialties of Ashtanga Ayurveda, which is concerned with aphrodisiacs. With CCIM replaced by the NCISM in 2020, the new commission has been rolling out a new syllabus phase-wise, with first-year BAMS students studying the new syllabus. In the meantime, second, third and fourth year students are still following the old syllabus.
