A University of Hyderabad (UoH) incubated start-up has come with up two diagnostic tests to detect neutralising activity of samples in response to Covid-19 vaccination. Unlike other tests that measure neutralising antibodies in blood samples, these two tests use saliva samples.

After any vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the body develops neutralising antibodies that help fight the virus. The degree of protection offered by the vaccine depends on the neutralising antibodies generated by the individual’s immune system. After some time, the neutralising antibody decreases and booster doses may be required.

The start-up has now entered into a partnership with Lay Science Inc USA. Under the terms of the agreement, Lay Science will pay for the development of the two patent-pending diagnostics through commercialisation and the start-up will receive royalty payments upon the successful launch of both the tests.

“These saliva-based diagnostic tests offer yet another line of defense against the onslaught of rapidly evolving SARS-CoV-2 viral variants. These two diagnostic tests are simple and easy to use and this partnership reiterates Lay Science’s commitment to fighting Covid-19,” said Lay Science CEO Dr. Satish Chandran.

Earlier, UoH has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ACCESS Health International (AHI), to work towards capacity building within study programs across schools, collaborative research projects and internships, academics and research in actuarial sciences, digital initiatives, and big data analytics in the area of healthcare.
