The future belongs to designers who will master balance of creativity and commerce, innovation and tradition, global appeal and personal authenticity. These are complementary forces that when balanced skillfully, create exceptional fashion brands.

Fashion industry requires an intersection of creativity and commerce, perfectly balancing the two has become a defining skill of our generation. As someone who is an educator preparing tomorrow's designers, I witness tension between artistic expression and market demands. When a student master’s this skill, it becomes the designer’s greatest asset.

Innovation is not only nurtured but refined as well through collaborations. It’s a dynamic collaboration between the mentors and emerging designers to work together to transform ideas into concepts. It requires extensive research from various sources. They key lies in not only encouraging students to conceptualize but also actively apply their ideas, use necessary tools and develop prototypes. It also becomes essential for us to prepare the students for the future by preparing them to fail. It is often difficult to take critique but avoiding it hinders long-term success. As a faculty, I often find myself balancing the need to be candid with expectation to adhere to the standard norms, while making sure my opinions are communicated clearly.

It is important for fashion designers to stay relevant, impactful, and future ready. Hence, at Whistling Woods, some of our most exciting student work have been when the students styled and accessorised for Neeta Lulla's shoot and showcase, they worked on her concept development and research as well, our students have interned at the CHOLA by Sohaya as well where they contributed immensely during exhibitions and showcases. They also interned with Aseem Kapoor; one of India’s newest names talk about even showcasing in New York and Paris, Students have interned with his label for Fashion Week, showcases and exhibitions and have been engaged with his brand for 3 months long internship as well.

Fashion innovation has a bigger impact than what one can understand, it drives change, influences culture, and inspires generations.

Most important challenge facing young designers today is maintaining an authentic and a creative voice while building a commercially viable brand. In this digital age, designers have conformed to trends and their audience’s opinions often sacrificing personal artistic vision.

I always try to imbibe in the students that individuality isn't about being different but it’s about having something meaningful to say and finding their unique way of expressing it. The most successful designers develop what I refer to as an "authentic commercial voice", which is perfecting the art of expressing their creative identity while addressing audience needs. This comes from self-awareness along with a sense of cultural understanding. Authenticity can come from different inspirations like from their heritage, personal experiences or their unique perspectives.

We at Whistling Woods International understand the importance of this. Hence, we incorporate these teachings as part of the curriculum, we also give them various platforms to showcase their unique and authentic talent in front of the world, we collaborate with designers that have carved their own niche in the industry for internship opportunities so students can inculcate the art of balancing authenticity, innovation and commercial, we even conducted a session with Rochelle Pinto, Head of Editorial content at Vogue on Business of Fashion, Individuality and Innovation.

The fashion industry has now unlimited possibilities for those willing to embrace complexity. There are new career roles emerging in fashion design that students can explore like AI assisted design engineers, Fashion Tech Product Manager, 3D printing product design to name a few.  I am excited for the future of Fashion and hope that our students will incorporate their learnings and practices in their future and make a mark in the industry.
