Adaptive Testing Not Part of JEE Advanced 2026; Exam Pattern to Remain Same
Amid rumours of changes to the JEE Advanced exam pattern due to the 'adaptive testing' model, IIT Roorkee has released an official clarification. Know the conducting body's final decision on the exam pattern for the IIT JEE exam.
The organising institute for JEE Advanced 2026, IIT Roorkee, has clarified that the JEE Advanced exam pattern 2026 will remain the same as in previous years. The institute also mentions that the relevant details on the exam have been published in the information brochure released earlier. Aspirants can check the official announcement on the website- jeeadv.ac.in. This means students preparing for the exam can continue to follow the same preparation strategy used over the years.
The clarification comes after several media reports suggested that the exam pattern could change this year. These reports were linked to discussions about introducing adaptive testing methods in the future.
What is Adaptive Testing?
In the adaptive testing system, the question difficulty levelย will change based on how a student answers the initial questions. So, if a candidate answers a question correctly, the next question that appears may be slightly tougher. If the answer is wrong, the system will give an easier question next.

There has been no update on any changes in the JEE Advanced 2026 attempt limits. If any changes are to be made in the attempt limit, the same will be officially notified at jeeadv.ac.in. Currently, the JEE Advanced attempt limit is twice in two consecutive years.
The JEE Advanced exam pattern is dynamic. It changes every year. The only known aspect of the JEE Advanced exam pattern are:
- The number of papers: There are two papers - paper 1 and paper 2.
- The exam mode: The JEE Advanced exam is held in computer based test mode.
- Duration: The exam is held for 6 hours. Each paper is of 3 hours.
- Subjects: Each question papers has questions from three sections - Maths, Physics and Chemistry
JEE Advanced pattern will change every year in terms of making scheme and the kinds of questions asked (MCQs, match the following, paragraph type, numerical answer type.)
The JEE Advanced marking scheme changes every year. Uauallt there are questions carrying 1 marks, 2 marks, 3 marks and 4 marks. There are partial negative marking and complete negative marking format. The exact marking scheme is notified to the candidates on the exam day.
The exam conducting body does not announce the JEE Advanced exam pattern before the test. Candidates can check the breakdown of the question paper while checking the instructions during the exam. Moreover, each year, the exact marking scheme and question types vary, though the overall pattern is generally the same.ย
The JEE Advanced exam is held for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at IITs and IISc Bangalore. Only candidates who qualify JEE Main with a rank above 2,50,000 and meet the eligibility criteria can appear for the test. The JEE Advanced 2026 exam date is May 17. The authorities will conduct the exam for 2 compulsory papers on the same day, shift 1 will be held from 9 AM to 12 PM, while shift 2 exam will be held from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Both papers will include questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The authority will prepare the rank list by considering both papers 1 and 2.
