BITS Pilani Revises UG Curriculum for AI Era; Adds Research, Industry Exposure & Wellbeing
BITS Pilani has revised its undergraduate curriculum with AI-related subjects, research opportunities, industry exposure and 60 hours of wellbeing activities. Check more details on this page.
BITS Pilani has revised its undergraduate (UG) curriculum to prepare students for the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and the workplace. The changes aim to give students more flexibility in choosing subjects, strengthen research and practical learning, and include activities related to physical and mental wellbeing.
V Ramgopal Rao, group vice chancellor of BITS Pilani and former director of IIT Delhi, said the revised curriculum combines science, engineering and computing with subjects from the humanities and arts. Students will also get opportunities to explore design thinking, entrepreneurship and real-world problem-solving.
The changes come as AI continues to affect how students learn and how companies approach work. The institute aims to help students develop practical skills and apply their knowledge to problems beyond the classroom.
BITS Pilani Strengthens Research and Practical Learning
The revised curriculum gives greater importance to research and project work through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP), Advanced UROP and Super UROP. The institute is also using its Practice School programme to provide industry mentorship and support students interested in entrepreneurship.
These initiatives are intended to give students more opportunities to apply classroom learning to practical problems and explore how their ideas can be developed further. BITS Pilani has also spent more than Rs 50 crore this year upgrading undergraduate laboratories at its Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses.
AI, Data Science and Other Emerging Subjects Included
The revised curriculum covers several emerging areas, including artificial intelligence, data science, software construction, quantum information and computation, astronomy, and materials chemistry. Students will also have more opportunities to choose interdisciplinary electives and study subjects outside their main academic discipline. The flexibility is intended to help them explore different fields alongside their core studies.
60 Hours of Wellbeing Activities
Another key change is the introduction of a Points of Experience framework. Under this system, undergraduate students will have to complete 30 Points of Experience, equivalent to around 60 hours of activities. These activities will cover physical fitness, creative pursuits, wellbeing workshops, social conduct and community engagement. Unlike conventional academic requirements, these activities will be recognised through experience points rather than academic credits. The framework makes participation in these activities a formal part of undergraduate programmes.
