NIT students will have to score a CGPA of 8 to be termed eligible for admission.

Indian Institute of Delhi (IITD) will now allow students of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) to take admission to its PhD programmes without having to appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). The institute will sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with select NITs in the initial phase of the new admission policy which will be implemented from the academic year 2020-21.

In order to be termed eligible, students must obtain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 8. According to V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi, “Teaching and examination pattern of IITs and NITs is very similar. Thus, the quality of students does not vary too much. The new policy would help us in attracting the right research talent and improve the overall research ecosystem.”

The BTech students at NIT pursuing their final year will be able to take admission at IIT Delhi on a provisional basis and will be required to maintain the minimum CGPA for at a year to secure a seat. Students will be allowed to complete their coursework from at IITD along with their research project and will receive the bachelors degree from their respective NITs.

“This move is in sync with the MHRD's mandate to help NITs across the country and the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF),” added Rao. Another reason behind the move is to tap the ‘second-best talent pool’ due to decreased interest among IIT graduates to pursue PhD programe at IITs.
