IIT Roorkee is holding the 17th edition of the quadrennial symposium on earthquakes from November 14 to November 17, 2022.

IIT Roorkee's 17th symposium on earthquake engineering starts today

The 17th edition of the symposium on earthquakes is being organised by IIT Roorkee from today, November 14, 2022, and it will conclude on November 17, 2022.

"Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE), which is also a quadrennial event. The department is proud to have hosted sixteen successful symposiums since February 1959 till the recent one held in December, 2018. The resolution of these symposium became the guiding force for future course of direction in maintaining and upgrading the department, removing weaknesses & bottlenecks and bringing research studies at par with international standards," reads the statement by IIT Roorkee.

IIT Roorkee's symposium details

Day 1 started with a warm inauguration done by the Chief Guest Dr S S Sandhu, Chief Secretary, Govt of Uttarakhand in the presence of Dr K K Pant, Director at IIT Roorkee, Sh S Bagauli, Secretary, Govt of Uttarakhand, Sh A K Sinha, ADG, Police.

"The Symposium on Earthquake Engineering is a quadrennial event being held from 1959 for bringing together Engineers, Geologists, Seismologists and Scientists with the sole purpose of advancing the knowledge of Earthquake Engineering in the country. The conference also becomes the cornerstone on understanding the current status of earthquake engineering in our country," said Prof. Manish Shrikhande, Head of the Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee.

"The resolution of the symposiums becomes the guiding force for future course of direction in upgrading earthquake engineering research in the country. Incorporation of earthquake resistant design features in urban and rural dwellings, initiation in the development and revision of IS codes and exploration of disaster mitigation planning are some major achievements realized as the end results of symposiums held earlier," he added.
