IITs Add 400 More Seats This Year; Nearly 2,900 New Seats Available via JoSAA 2025 Counselling

IITs Add 400 More Seats for 2025-26; Nearly 2,900 New Seats Available via JoSAA Counselling

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2025 has released the detailed seat matrix for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. As per data released for the number of seats, the total number of undergraduate engineering seats available through JoSAA counselling has increased to 62,853 in 2025, up from 59,937 in 2024. This marks a net addition of 2,916 seats, reflecting a 4.86% rise over the previous year.

JoSAA 2025 Seat Matrix: 2916 New Seats Added across all IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs

According to official data, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) now offer 18,160 seats, compared to 17,760 last year. This marks an increase of 400 seats. The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) have added 296 new seats, taking their total to 24,525 from 24,229 in 2024.

The highest increase has come from the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), which have added 1,394 seats. Their total has gone up from 8,546 in 2024 to 9,940 in 2025.

Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) have also seen a notable rise, increasing from 9,402 to 10,228 seats, a growth of 826 seats.

JoSAA 2025 counselling registration will start today at josaa.nic.in. Check below the analysis of seats available for the academic session 2025-26:

IIT Admissions 2025: 54,378 Candidates Against 18,160 Seats

A total of 54,378 candidates have qualified JEE Advanced 2025 exam. Out of the 2,50,236 who were declared qualified for JEE Advanced, 1,87,223 registered this year, and 1,80,422 appeared for both JEE Advanced 2025 paper 1 and paper 2 exams.

54,378 candidates will now compete against each other to grab 18,160 seats across 23 IITs. The JoSAA 2025 counselling mode is online and comprises registration, followed by choice filling and locking. The candidates who register for JoSAA counselling can proceed to fill in choices of institutes and courses in the JoSAA counselling portal. The candidates, once registered, can check their JoSAA login for the facility of JoSAA choice filling.
