The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes issued three days ultimatum to IIT Bombay Director Subhasis Chaudhuri seeking a report on the matter.

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has sent a notice to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) (Bombay) for failing to provide mental health support to the institute’s Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students.

The NCST has issued a three-day ultimatum to IIT Bombay Director Subhasis Chaudhuri, seeking a detailed report on what action the institute had taken to address the issue. The commission had received a complaint from Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, APPSC-a students’ collective from IIT Bombay, in this regard in June last year.

The notice, dated 31 January 2023, says, “The Commission has decided to investigate/inquire into the matter in pursuance of the powers conferred upon it under Article 338A of the Constitution of India.”

The NSCT notice further stated that if the institution failed to submit a detailed report within the next three days, the commission would exercise its powers as Civil Court to summon any and all officials concerned.
