The National Institute of Technology Rourkela has introduced two new BTech programmes for the 2026-27 academic session. The newly launched courses are BTech in Mathematics and Computing and BTech in Engineering Physics. Both will admit students through the Joint Entrance Examination Main 2026 counselling - JoSAA.

NIT Rourkela Launches 2 New BTech Courses for 2026 Admissions; 50 Seats Available Through JEE Main

NIT Rourkela has introduced two new BTech courses starting this year. These courses have been launched to equip students with future-ready skills in emerging technology domains such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, semiconductor systems, advanced computing, and scientific innovation. The move is in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises research-oriented learning.

BTech in Mathematics and Computing Programme

The Department of Mathematics will offer the BTech in Mathematics and Computing programme. The curriculum will combine mathematics, computer science, and data-driven technologies. Students enrolled in the programme will study subjects such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, cryptography, data structures, algorithms, numerical analysis, and statistical modelling.

The first batch of the programme will have an intake of 25 students. Admissions will be conducted through JEE Main ranks through JoSAA counselling.

BTech in Engineering Physics Programme

Meanwhile, the newly launched BTech in Engineering Physics programme will focus on advanced scientific and technological fields, including semiconductor devices, photonics, nanotechnology, quantum technologies, optoelectronics, materials science, cryogenics, astronomy, and space technology.

The Engineering Physics programme will also admit 25 students in its first batch through JEE Main 2026.

Apart from the two BTech courses, NIT Rourkela has also launched two new MTech programmes - MTech in Semiconductor Devices and Technology, and MTech in Machine Learning and Signal Analysis - with admissions through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

Q:   Is a domicile Certificate required for admission to NITs?
A: 

Yes, candidates are required to submit proof of domicile in case availing the home-state quota in NITs. It is only NIT where admission is offered against the Home State quota.

Candidates home state is determined based on the state from which you appear for your 12th board exam and on the basis of the state to which you belong. 

Q:   What is JEE Main cutoff for IIITs?
A: 

The cutoff for IIITs vary for various branches and also category of students. Specialised branches like computer Science and electronics engineering has higher cutoff in comparison to other branches. Similarly, JEE Main cutoff for general category candidates is higher in comparison to OBC-NCL and SC/ST candidates. 

Q:   Can I take admission in any institute if I do not get JEE Main cutoff marks?
A: 

Candidates who do not score above JEE Main cutoff marks are eligible to take admissions in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs but not IITs. To appear in the admission process for IITs, candidates need to get marks above than the JEE Main cutoff and appear in JEE Advanced exam.
