Two professors of IIT Madras, Seshadri Sekhar and Shreepad Karmalkar, have been appointed as Directors of IIT Palakkad and IIT Bhubaneshwar, respectively. IIT Bhubaneswar has been without a full-time Director since April 2020. 

According to the Education Ministry, President Droupadi Murmu has approved the appointment of new directors to eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).  

Two professors of IIT Madras, Seshadri Sekhar and Shreepad Karmalkar, have been appointed as Directors of IIT Palakkad and IIT Bhubaneshwar, respectively. IIT Bhubaneswar has been without a full-time Director since April 2020. 

While Venkayappaya R Desai from the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Kharagpur has been appointed as the Director of IIT Dhardwad, Pasumarthy Seshu, the current Director of the institute, has been chosen as the Director of IIT Goa. 

IIT Tirupati, IIT Jammu Directors reappointed for second term 

Others appointed for the top posts are KN Satyanarayana (IIT Tirupati), Rajiv Prakash (IIT Bhilai), Rajat Moona (IIT Gandhinagar) and Manoj Singh Gaur. KN Satyanarayana (IIT Tirupati) and Manoj Singh Gaur (IIT Jammu) have been reappointed for a second term. 

The Ministry of Education tweeted, “Hon’ble President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu in her capacity as the Visitor of IITs approves the appointment of Directors of IITs. @EduMinOfIndia extends best wishes for a fulfilling and successful tenure.” The applications for six of the new IITs — Dharwad, Goa, Palakkad, Jammu, Bhilai, and Tirupati — were made by the Education Ministry in 2021.  

Murmu had recently attended the closing ceremony of Diamond Jubilee celebrations of IIT Delhi wherein she had said the IITs have been the pride of the nation. The IITs proved to the world the capability of India in the domains of education and technology. In more than one way, the story of the IITs is the story of Independent India. The IITs have contributed immensely to India’s improved standing on the global stage today, she added.
