Top Government Engineering Colleges In India As Per NIRF Ranking 2025

The much-awaited National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings for 2025 are out now. IIT Madras maintains #1 rank for the tenth consecutive year. The framework, approved by MOE, ranks institutes under various categories. While the top 10 government engineering colleges in India are dominated by IITs, check which non-IITs make it to the charts.
The Ministry of Education, Govt of India, has released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025 rankings today. According to the NIRF 2025 rankings, IIT Madras remains the top engineering college in India, maintaining its position for the 10th consecutive year. As seen in previous years, IITs top the charts for the best government colleges in the engineering category; however, not all IITs have ranked higher. The top government engineering colleges in India include several NITs ranked higher than IITs based on their scores and output generated. The top 10 engineering institutions see a slight change in the rankings as IIT Hyderabad and Guwahati swap positions for this year's rankings. NIT Trichy is again the only non-IIT making it to the top 10 government engineering colleges.
The NIRF rankings yet again prove that merely the “IIT-tag” does not guarantee a top spot, but the performance under specific parameters ultimately decides the rankings. These rankings then influence college preferences, incentives by the government and other sources in contributing towards development. The NIRF ranking is based on several parameters like ‘Teaching, Learning and Resources’, ‘Research and Professional Practices’, ‘Graduation Outcomes’, ‘Outreach and Inclusivity’, and ‘Perception’.
