Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s Professor of Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Shantanu Bhowmik, has created a lightweight hybrid composite bulletproof material which is also blast and fireproof. The material is three times lighter than steel and offers exceptional resilience in intense circumstances. Besides, the material meets NATO’s STANAG Levels 3 and 4 standards and is also successfully tested in Siachen Glacier to ensure protection for defence vehicles and bunkers.

The material highlights the Make in India initiative of the government and the innovation reportedly is expected to save INR 20,000 crore, annually, by reducing the import dependence on significant purchases of raw material/ finished products for the defence sector. The innovation, duly supported by Lt. Gen. Subrata Saha (Retd.) and has been endorsed by Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

The composites have been named after legend warriors i.e. Netaji Subhas Armour (Lightweight Bulletproof Composite), Chatrapati Shivaji Armour (Blast-Proof Composite), Rani Lakshmi Bai Armour (Fireproof Composite), Rani Chennamma Armour (Transparent Bulletproof Composite), and Shaheed Udham Singh Armour (Mine-Blast Resistant Composite).

Material to Protect Bunkers and Vehicles

“This revolutionary hybrid composite showcases India’s swiftly advancing capabilities in homegrown defence technology. It highlights Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham’s commitment to promoting essential research aimed at benefiting both the nation and the global community.” Says Dr Bhowmik. The composite is expected to give protection to vehicles, bunkers, boats resisting blasts (up to 10 kg of TNT), sniper rifle rounds, and gunfire
