Education Ministry’s official statement issued on November 7, 2025 states that earlier order issued on October 28, 2025, “shall stand rescinded.”

Ministry of Education has withdrawn its recent order that proposed changes in Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University (PU). The rollback came after widespread protests by students, teachers, and alumni who opposed the Centre’s move to alter PU’s structure.

In an official notice issued on November 7, 2025, Ministry has stated that earlier order of October 28, 2025, “shall stand rescinded.” The October directive sought to reconstitute PU Senate and Syndicate, the two top decision-making bodies of the university.

The decision followed a series of protests and appeals by political parties and student groups urging the Centre to respect university’s autonomous character. Student unions under banner of “PU Bachao Morcha” had warned of intensified agitation if the notification was not withdrawn.

Leaders of political parties like the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) welcomed the move, calling it a “victory for democracy” and a sign that Centre could not defend what they termed an “illegal act.” Meanwhile, the Punjab BJP clarified that the earlier notification “will never be implemented under any circumstances.”

Though centre has withdrawn its notification there is still no clarity on how the existing Senate and Syndicate will function in the absence of new elections.
