The Indian Embassy in Iran has urged Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin to remain vigilant, providing a Google Form on its X account for citizens to register their details.

As the Israel-Iran conflict escalates, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that Indian students in Iran are being relocated to safer areas within the country to ensure their safety. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions following airstrikes and missile exchanges in the region, raising global concerns about a wider Middle East conflict.

The MEA stated on Monday, “India is closely monitoring the security situation to ensure the safety and welfare of its nationals in both countries.” The Indian Embassy in Tehran is facilitating the relocation of students to secure locations, with “other feasible options also under examination.” The embassy is also coordinating with community leaders to address the welfare of Indian citizens.

The conflict, intensified by Israel’s airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and military sites on June 13, followed by Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone attacks, has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating over 200 lives lost in Iran and several in Israel. This volatile situation has left many Indian nationals, including numerous students, in a precarious position.

Indian Embassy’s Efforts

The Indian Embassy in Iran has urged Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin to remain vigilant, providing a Google Form on its X account for citizens to register their details. Emergency contact numbers have been shared to assist those in need. Posts on X have praised the embassy’s proactive measures, with one user noting, “India is continuously monitoring the situation in #Iran. @MEAIndia is engaging with Indian students and relocated them with Embassy’s facilitation to safer places.”

However, some X posts have raised concerns about delays in evacuation. One user claimed, “Over 1,500 Indian students are stranded in Iran, including around 140 medical students at the University of Tehran,” urging External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for swift action. These figures, echoed by opposition voices, remain unverified by the MEA, which has not disclosed the exact number of students affected.

India’s Neutral Stance

India has maintained neutrality in the Israel-Iran conflict, opting out of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) statement condemning Israel’s actions. On June 14, the MEA clarified, “India did not participate in the SCO discussions. Our position, articulated on June 13, remains the same—we urge dialogue and diplomacy for de-escalation.” This reflects India’s balanced approach, given its ties with both nations.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has engaged with his Iranian and Israeli counterparts, advocating for peace and stability. The MEA has emphasized that Indian embassies in Tehran and Tel Aviv are in constant communication with the Indian community, advising citizens to adhere to local safety protocols.

Social Media and Public Sentiment

On X, #IsraelIranWar is trending, with users discussing the conflict’s global impact and India’s response. Posts like “Indian students in Iran being moved to safer places within the country, says New Delhi as Middle East conflict intensifies” highlight optimism about the MEA’s efforts. However, speculative claims, such as “Indian students can reach India via Pakistan’s Taftan/Wagah under security on humanitarian grounds,” lack official confirmation and appear unfeasible.

The term “Middle East Conflict” is also gaining traction on X, with calls for international efforts to de-escalate tensions. While unrelated trends like “Toni’s Stand on Love Island” and “Oracle Stock Surges” dominate entertainment and business, the Israel-Iran conflict remains a key news focus, amplifying India’s response.

Challenges and Future Steps

Opposition voices have criticized the MEA’s advisories as insufficient, calling for a coordinated evacuation plan. While the MEA has not announced evacuation measures as of June 16, its mention of “other feasible options” suggests potential repatriation plans are under review.

With thousands of Indians in Iran, primarily in Tehran for education and trade, the government faces the challenge of ensuring their safety in a volatile environment. The Indian Embassy’s 24/7 helplines and coordination with local authorities aim to address these concerns.

As the crisis unfolds, India remains focused on safeguarding its citizens while advocating for peace. The MEA has urged Indian nationals in the region to stay cautious and follow local advisories, reinforcing its commitment to their safety. #IndiaDiplomacy #MiddleEastCrisis
