Mumbai University Launches Carbon Dating AMS Facility to Enhance Research in Archaeology and Biomedical Science
Established at a cost of approximately INR 20 crore, the University of Mumbai's first ever fully operational Carbon Dating Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) facility will help students, researchers to gain a thorough understanding of archaeology, ancient cultures and history.
The University of Mumbai has launched the fully operational Carbon Dating Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) facility on the university premises. The university Carbon Dating AMS facility will benefit students, researchers and industries across the county to gain knowledge related to archaeology, ancient cultures, and history. The facility has the potential to transform archaeology and ancient history studies by allowing for the precise ranging of objects and materials spanning back 50,000 years or more.
Built With a Cost of INR 20 Crore
The Carbon Dating Accelerator Mass Spectrometry device has been esablished with a cost of INR 20 crore. The university highlighted that MU is now the first university in the country to house such advanced technology.
Till now, the samples of carbon dating are sent abroad at an average cost of $600 per sample. With this facility, Mumbai University is ready to address the rising needs of the accelerator community. This Carbon Dating facility is a national property. It will be available for researchers, students, scientists, and industries, guaranteeing that India's scientific community will benefit from this cutting-edge technology.
Aim to Benefit Biomedical Science
The research center will also help with nuclear industry studies by detecting carbon-14 emissions in nuclear power stations and dating lake sediment cores to track environmental changes over time. Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) is projected to be employed in biomedical sciences to trace biological processes and accurately analyze tiny amounts of chemicals.
