Students association demands concessional metro passes for students
Student's Federation of India organized a protest demonstration at the Delhi Secretariat demanding concessional student metro passes.
A delegation of four students belonging to Student's Federation of India today met the Delhi transport minister Kailash Gehlot while some of the students are sitting on dharna outside Delhi Secretariat.
Delhi's student population stood at 3 lakh in 2019 and has exponentially been growing. Along with this massive population concentration in Delhi comes the expansion of the area where students reside. Students living on the outskirts of Delhi and in areas where DTC buses do not go face a major problem in transportation. As the Metro proves to be the only method of commute for most students, according to them, high fares of the DMRC prove to not only be an inconvenience, but a restrition in a student's education. Access to public transportation to be made affordable for students is a basic necessity.
Buses as a method of transportation fail in comparision to the metro. Timings are is 3hirregular and lead to students missing classes. Metro is a more punctual option, while also giving the students a comfortable environment to pull out a book to read. In an attempt to escape heatwaves and pollution, students have to resort to using private transport like autos and cab services, which costs the same as the high metro rates.
βCities like Kochi have already gone through with schemes like what we demand. Students can avail discounts varying from 60% to 83% in Kochi metro travel fare. The rapid educational development in Delhi gives more need to this demand. Concessional metro passes for students will aid this development even further as well,β demands SFI.
We want affordable access to transportation, from areas further than DTC buses go. We want comfortable and timely transit. We want education and we want ease in accessibility to it! Give us concessional metro passes. It is our right!
