The school of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary studies of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new programme, Postgraduate diploma in migration and diaspora (PGDMIDI) which will begin from January 2022 academic session.

The one year PG diploma course will be offered in an open distance learning mode and will be available only in English. The course includes both theoretical and project assignments.

The IGNOU website says, “The objectives of the programme are to impart the skills by using social science knowledge and tools to understand the current issues and concerns relating to the global movement of people, products and ideas and hence helping various stakeholders including those who are in policy to engage more meaningfully with the world unfolding before them.” 

IGNOU also claims that the programme will help working professions in government organisations, foreign trade, UN organisations, embassies and external ministries, migrant and diaspora organizations etc.

The programme description at IGNOU portal says, "P.G. Diploma in Migration and Diaspora (PGDMIDI) covers both theoretical and project works. The main objectives of the programme are to impart the skills by using social science knowledge and tools to understand/ make sense of the current issues and concerns relating to the global movement of people, products and ideas and hence helping various stakeholders including those who are in policy to engage more meaningfully with the world unfolding before them. The programme is important for professionals working Government, Foreign Trade, UN organisations, Embassies and External Ministries, Migrant and diaspora organizations etc. The programme helps in providing informed understanding of migration processes, role of diasporas in development, development-migration nexus, information for policies, planning and researches, various regulations related to international migration, best practices in migration and diaspora engagement, human rights issues of migrant communities etc."

The registration fee is INR 200, and the candidates are required to pay a fee amount of INR 6,100 to enrol for the course. The eligibility criterion is the candidate must have a bachelor's degree from a recognised university.
