Kerala Govt to introduce Bill to replace Governor as Chancellor of Universities

The decision has been taken in wake of the ongoing tussle between the state government and the Governor Arif Mohammed Khan over various issues pertaining to the functioning of universities in the state and including the appointment of Vice Chancellors (VCs).

Kerala Govt to introduce Bill to replace Governor as Chancellor of Universities

Kerala Government has decided to move a Bill in the Legislative Assembly for replacing the Governor with eminent academicians as Chancellor of the universities in the state. Kerala Government will be moving the Bill when it convenes on December 5.

"A draft Bill in this regard was approved by a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here during the day," a government source confirmed, as reported by NDTV.

The decision has been taken in wake of the ongoing tussle between the state government and the Governor Arif Mohammed Khan over various issues pertaining to the functioning of universities in the state and including the appointment of Vice Chancellors (VCs). However, some recent Kerala High Court orders have vindicated Khan's stand on the appointments of VCs of certain universities.

Earlier, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan said that the ordinance issued by the Left government seeking to remove him as the chancellor of Universities has become infructuous now as the Assembly is summoned. In November, the government issued an ordinance stripping the Governor of the chancellorship of State Universities. It also later decided to convene the Assembly session on December 5.
