Is CLAT GK Officially Dead? Inside NLU Consortium’s Proposed Syllabus Overhaul

CLAT GK section is under major discussion, as an expert committee has proposed removing the standalone GK and Current Affairs section in a future overhaul. However, the consortium of NLUs has not confirmed any syllabus or pattern changes for CLAT 2027, and the decision on the proposed three-section pattern, essay section and type of questions are yet to be implemented by the board. 

The Consortium of NLUs will conduct the CLAT 2027 exam on December 6, 2026, from 2 PM to 4 PM. Students who are willing to appear for this national law entrance test are curious to know whether the GK section is still part of the CLAT syllabus 2027 or not. The question “Is CLAT GK officially dead?” has been asked by law aspirants after the Consortium of National Law Universities published the CLAT Expert Committee Report 2026. The report has proposed a restructuring of the CLAT syllabus, including the removal of the standalone General Knowledge and Current Affairs section. 

Is CLAT GK Officially Dead?

The Consortium of NLUs clarified on July 21, 2026, that the CLAT syllabus 2027 is unchanged. Merely, proposed changes do not mean GK has been removed from the upcoming CLAT 2027 exam syllabus. The Consortium has officially notified that there will be no changes to the syllabus or pattern/sections of CLAT 2027. The existing five-section format, including Current Affairs and General Knowledge, remains applicable for the upcoming exam. Meanwhile, the Expert Committee’s recommendations are being considered as part of a broader review and future discussions. 

What Did the CLAT Expert Committee Propose?

The Expert Committee has proposed a restructuring of the examination. One of its key recommendations is to shift from the existing five-section structure and create a three-section model. The proposed changes include:

• Removing the separate GK and Current Affairs section.
• Merging Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning into an aptitude section.
• Renaming/restructuring English Language as Language and Comprehension.
• Reducing the number of questions.
• Introducing a separate subjective essay component.

Students must note that these are recommendations, not the final syllabus/ pattern for the further examination.
