The MBA programme in AI and DS is designed not only for individuals with a technical background but also for those who have limited exposure to the field. Sarin explained that the programme focuses on blending technical expertise with strategic thinking, and critical and analytical skills are key to succeeding in it.
With AI and Data Science (DS) becoming integral to nearly every industry, the demand for management graduates with expertise in these fields is on the rise. To meet this growing need, the Manipal-based TA Pai Management Institute (TAPMI) has announced the launch of its MBA programme in AI and DS, starting from the academic year 2025-26.
Pioneering Step in Management Education
Rajeev Kumra, Director of TAPMI, emphasized that this new MBA (AI and DS) programme represents a significant advancement in management education. It aligns with TAPMIβs mission to foster transformative leaders who integrate business management principles with the latest technological frameworks. βThis programme is designed to equip future leaders with the skills necessary to leverage AI and data-driven insights for impactful decision-making,β said Kumra.
Rising Demand for AI and DS Expertise in India
Gaurav Sarin, Chairperson of the MBA (AI and DS) programme, noted that the need for MBA graduates with expertise in AI and DS in India is increasing rapidly. By 2025, the employment rate for Indian business administration graduates is expected to rise to approximately 78%, up from 47% in 2021. These graduates are moving into key sectors such as banking, healthcare, technology, and retail, filling roles like data scientist, machine learning specialist, and chief data officer.
Sarin also pointed out that compensation for these roles varies based on experience and job complexity, but data science specialists in India receive competitive salaries. βThese graduates bridge the gap between the technical and business sectors, applying data-driven methods to foster innovation and gain a competitive edge,β he added.
Who is this Programme For?
The MBA programme in AI and DS is designed not only for individuals with a technical background but also for those who have limited exposure to the field. Sarin explained that the programme focuses on blending technical expertise with strategic thinking, and critical and analytical skills are key to succeeding in it.
To address potential gaps in technical knowledge, TAPMI has partnered with the Manipal School of Information Sciences. The first year of the programme offers a solid foundation in business management for all students, regardless of their prior technical knowledge.
Keeping the Curriculum Up-to-Date
Given the rapid advancements in AI and DS, Sarin explained that TAPMI follows a dynamic approach to ensure the curriculum remains relevant. The programme undergoes routine industry consultations, collaborations with technology firms, and curriculum evaluations every six to 12 months. βWe use the newest breakthroughs in AI, live case studies, practical capstone projects, guest lectures, and hackathons to ensure that our students are well-prepared for industry demands,β said Sarin.
Students will also have access to cloud platforms, open-source AI tools, and research-oriented electives to stay at the forefront of the latest technological trends.
Collaboration with Microsoft and MAHE
The programme will benefit from a significant partnership between TAPMI, Microsoft India, and the broader Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) ecosystem. This collaboration will integrate Microsoftβs Azure Cloud platform and AI and DS methodologies into the curriculum. Additionally, specialized classes will be offered during the second year of electives, giving students direct access to cutting-edge technologies.
βWe are leveraging this partnership across the MAHE ecosystem, which will play a pivotal role in training our students and offering them opportunities to work with industry experts,β said Sarin.
Future of AI and DS Programmes at TAPMI
Looking ahead, Sarin highlighted that AI and DS programmes will continue to evolve, with increased industry integration and a focus on ethics and governance. He also anticipates that experiential learning through practical projects, AI-enhanced education, and open-source cooperation will play a key role in shaping the future of the programme.
βOver the next five to ten years, AI and DS programmes will place greater emphasis on strategic deployment rather than coding. Emerging fields like quantum computing, edge AI, and AI for sustainability will gain prominence,β Sarin concluded. "In addition, adaptable, modular, and competency-based educational frameworks will replace traditional degree programmes, ensuring that graduates are aligned with ever-evolving industry needs."
This forward-thinking MBA programme is set to offer a comprehensive education in AI and Data Science, preparing students to become leaders in the rapidly changing landscape of business and technology.
