Kolhapur’s Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Medical College gets the permission of the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start ten PG medical courses with a total intake capacity of 38 students. The government medical college has 150 seats for MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) but it did not have the approval to enrol MBBS graduates in PG medical courses.

Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Medical College has Chhatrapati Pramila Raje Civil Hospital attached with it. The college authorities have said that this nod by the apex body governing medical education in India is a milestone and it will be helpful for the enrolment of resident doctors to higher studies and will also help in strengthing services to the patients.

TOI quoted Sangita Kumbhojkar, Vice-dean of Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Medical College, "The inspections were done by a team deployed by the NMC earlier this year. We have all the required facilities - library, teaching hall, top doctors - to start PG courses. The MBBS graduates after completing their internship will be enrolled on these PG courses based on their ranks in all-India PG entrance exam. We will get top medical graduates available for the service of the patients. They will undergo on-job training for three years."

In this region, there is one government medical college for each district of Sangli, Solapur, and Kolhapur and the state government is preparing to start one medical college in Satara. PG medical courses are already being run at Solapur and Miraj medical colleges.
