The postgraduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET PG), conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE), does not have any fixed syllabus. Every website that mentions about this examination, states that the syllabus is everything that has been included in the MBBS curriculum. But this does not help those preparing for NEET PG at home, without the aid of any coaching institute. The most common query pertaining to the syllabus of this entrance test is: how many subjects are there in NEET PG? In this article we will answer this fundamental question along with a few important topics from each subject.

How many subjects are there in NEET PG 2026?

NEET PG question paper can be divided into three sections. Each of these sections can be further sub-divided into the subjects. The table given below enlists total number of question from each subject in NEET PG 2026. 

Q:   What is the pattern of NEET PG exam?
A:

NEET PG pattern comprises details about exam mode, medium, total number of questions, allotted time, and marking scheme. NBE conducts NEET PG exam in computer-based mode. The medium of the exam is English only. Candidates don't have option to select any other language in NEET PG exam.

A total of 200 multiple choice questions are asked and candidates get 3.5 hours to answer them. According to the marking scheme, for every right answer, 4 marks are awarded while for wrong response -1 mark is deducted. No mark will be awarded/deduced for unanswered question.

Q:   Will there be negative marking in the NEET PG exam?
A:

Yes. Mark is deducted for each wrong answer in NEET PG. For each right answer, candidates get 4 marks and for each wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted. As there is provision of the negative marking in exam, students are advised to answer only those questions where they feel confidence of right answer.

Q:   Will there be some changes in NEET PG 2026 pattern?
A:

There is least chance National Board of Examinations (NBE) will make some changes in NEET PG 2026 pattern. The exam pattern is released along with the official information brochure online. The exam pattern comprises crucial details pertaining to exam including mode, medium, total number of questions, their type, and marking scheme.

Coming back to the question, how many subjects are there in NEET PG. As per the division in the question paper of NEET PG, the total number of subjects is 14. The division of marks and the number of questions that can be asked from a section has been calculated for these 14 subjects.

However, when you look closely, you will find that section C comprises of eleven subjects. Five short subjects have been clubbed with two major subjects, General Medicine and General Surgery. When you actually start preparing for NEET PG 2025, you will have to read each of these short subjects separately. Thus, during the NEET PG preparation phase, the answer to the above question will be 19.

A few Important Topics from Each Subject of NEET PG 2026

For those preparing for the examination, there are 19 subjects that you need to prepare for NEET PG. The syllabus for each of these subjects has been given in brief here. NEET PG syllabus has also been divided into 19 subjects.

Q:   How many questions will be there in NEET PG 2025 exam?
A:

NEET PG 2025 question paper will comprise 200 questions. Total marks will be 800 marks. Students will be provided three and half hours to answer question paper. There will be a provision of negative marking. 

Q:   Has NEET PG 2026 pattern released by NBE?
A:

Not yet. NEET PG 2026 pattern will be released by NBE. Pattern and other crucial details related to NEET PG 2026 exam is released along with official information brochure. NEET PG 2026 is expected to be held in August. Exam pattern carries crucial details such as mode and medium, total of questions, allotted time, and marking scheme. 

Q:   What is time bound sections in NEET PG exam?
A:

NBE introduced time bound sections in NEET PG in 2024. It refers to fix time to attempt a particular section. Candidates have to exahusts allotted time of previous section before moving to next section. They can't choose to answer questions of any section as per their wish. In addition, one exahusted time of particular section, he/she can't go back and change answer in the section after time exahusts. As per time bound section, next section will start automatically once the allotted time exahusts. Whole NEET PG question paper is divided into 5 sections (A to E) with 40 questions each. The allotted time of particular section is 42 minutes.

Yes. MCC has reduced NEET PG 2025 cutoff percentile as well as score for each category. NEET PG 2025 percentile has bene reduced by 7th percentile for general category and 0th percentile for SC/ST category. For general category revised cutoff score is 103.
