West Bengal has joined the list of states against the NEET exam for admission to medical courses. West Bengal to Scrap NEET for Medical Admission
Reportedly, WB State Education Minister Bratya Basu said that they were never in favour of having a national-level entrance exam but were persuaded, as reported by NDTV. He further expressed that "When the exams were handed over to the Centre in the brazen step of dismantling the federal structure, there were protests from our side."
The state's resolution was made public a day after Apex Court's verdict to not conduct the NEET re-exam due to a lack of conclusive evidence proving the sanctity of the exam was breached. Besides, West Bengal scrap NEET for admission in medical programmes owing to NTA's alleged inability to conduct free and fair entrance examinations and protect the sanctity of the national-level entrance examination.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu assembly unanimously passed a resolution demanding the Centre to scrap NEET and permit state governments to conduct either their own medical entrance exam or allow admission based on merit in the qualifying examination.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, The Karnataka cabinet approved a proposal to scrap medical exams in the state. However, the proposal is yet to be ratified in both houses of the assembly.
