University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar has said that online courses provide a range of opportunities to students especially those who are not able to join physical classes in any college or university. Enrollment for online courses has also increased over the period of time due to the opportunities provided.
The UGC chairman tweeted, “Online programmes provide a window of opportunity to many students who are unable to join physically in a college or University. There is a steady increase in the number of enrolments in online programmes. Further, he tweeted, “However, this will pick up further once we announce the National Digital University together with flexible online education regulations.”
The UGC has seen a steady rise in enrollments and it is expected that this would continue once the National Digital University is announced. He said that "all need to take the advantage of the modern digital technologies to make digital content and also reach out to students using growing internet availability. This will help the students access education and become knowledgeable at an affordable cost."
He further tweeted, “This will enable the students to become more employable in the emerging job market and has the added advantage of increasing the gross enrolment ratio.”
The UGC Chairman also shared a few statistics that showed 66 Higher Educational Institutions are recognised/entitled to offer 371 programmes out of which Central, deemed to be university, state, and private universities offer 21, 166, 112 and 72 programmes. UGC will soon announce the National Digital University.
