Puducherry private medical colleges slash additional fees by 50%

Following the protest by the students and parents, a private medical college in Puducherry has slashed the additional fee of INR 1.2 lakh per year by 50 per cent. Soon after this, it also allowed students who were barred from attending the internship classes, to continue with the classes in the college.

While speaking on the same, M Narayanassamy, President, UT ALL CENTAC Student Parent Association, said that "after holding the discussion with the college management, the additional fee was scaled down from INR 1.2 lakh a year to INR 80,000. This fee is to be paid in addition to the 'tuition' fee of INR 3.13 lakh a year fixed by the Fee Fixation Committee for the college."

"Students are supposed to complete their internship by July 31, 2023. As they will not be allowed to sit in the NEET PG entrance exam and will lose a year, the parents have accepted this compromise," he said.

Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has released new guidelines for fee fixation for the current academic year. As per the new rules, the fee for 50 per cent of the seats in private medical colleges and deemed medical universities have to be at par with government medical colleges in the state.
