Schools closed in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvarur, Thanjavur district due to Cyclone Mandous

The announcement was made by Tiruvarur District Collector Gayatri Krishnan. The schools are closed on December 8 and as of now, no announcement has been made for the closure of schools in other districts.

Schools in Tamil Nadu districts have been closed due to a heavy rain warning. The schools have been closed in Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts. The announcement was made by Tiruvarur District Collector Gayatri Krishnan. The schools are closed on December 8 and as of now, no announcement has been made for the closure of schools in other districts.

Tamil Nadu Weather Department has predicted heavy rainfall and a possible cyclone formation on the rise. The Indian Metrological Department, IMD has also issued red alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu due to heavy rainfall and cyclone predictions for the south. The cyclone will bring heavy rain to Chennai which will lead of intensifying the downpour between Thursday and Saturday.

IMD has issued a red alert for around 13 districts in Tamil Nadu. These districts are - Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Chennai, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam. To be noted that the schools in Tiruvarur district were closed on December 5 in view of the “Kandoori (Sandal pot) Vizha” at Muthupet Dhargah.

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Mandous'.  Cyclone Mandous, which currently lays around 600 kilometres east-southeast of Chennai, is expected to make landfall between Puducherry and Sriharikota, which is north and sound of Chennai on the coastline, by the morning of December 10.
