SSC Recruitment Scam: ED raids TMC minister's residence

The Enforcement Directorate conducted a raid at the residence of the West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee in Kolkata today. The searches were carried out by the leader at the TMC leader's house as part of a probe into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staffs in the state-run schools through the School Service Commission (SSC).

Chatterjee is currently the West Bengal Industry Minister and was the Education Minister when the alleged illegal recruitments were made. He was also interrogated by the CBI in May, two times, in connection with their investigation into the SSC recruitment scam.

He is also the secretary general of TMC, and was summoned by the CBI after a division bench of the Calcutta High Court upheld orders of a single bench that directed the central probe agency to inquire into alleged illegal appointments. It must be noted that last week, West Bengal Education Secretary Manish Jain was also questioned by the CBI in connection alleged scam.

The members of the advisory panel, which was set up by the West Bengal School Education Department in November 2019, for monitoring pending recruitments of teaching and non-teaching staff in the schools, were also questioned by the CBI earlier.

The Calcutta High Court had earlier observed that a high-powered supervisory committee, approved by Partha Chatterjee, was the main people behind the alleged scam. The bench had ordered a CBI investigation into the recruitment process of teachers in state-aided schools after committee members overseeing the process from January 2019 made contradictory submissions before the court.
