The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts exams for the post of probationary officers in various participating banks which include major banks such as State Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra and others. Candidates who clear the exams are placed in the banks as Probationary Officers (PO) drawing a basic salary of Rs 23,700 per month. They also get a number of allowances in addition to the basic salary.  Further, they also get yearly increments of Rs 980 for seven years.

Allowances

Dearness Allowance (DA): The DA forms around 40 percent of the basic pay and is revised on a quarterly basis. It is based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) can increase or decrease according to the rate of inflation.

House Rent Allowance (HRA): The HRA depends on the place of posting whether metropolitan cities, big cities, other locations and is paid at nine per cent, eight per cent and seven per cent of the basic pay.

Special Allowance: POs get a special allowance at 7.75 percent of the basic pay.

City Compensatory Allowance (CCA): The CCA is determined by the place of posting such as the HRA, and can be four per cent, three per cent or Nil.

Benefits and perquisites

There are other benefits and perquisites which go with the job as follows:

Leased Accommodation: In certain locations, POs are provided with accommodation facilities or quarters and HRA is not provided in such cases.

Travelling Allowance: POs are also provided Travelling Allowance or reimbursement of fuel expenses Rs 3,000.

Medical Aid: Rs 8,000 per year

Newspaper Reimbursement: Rs 300

Your career growth in the role of a probationary officer is determined by your performance coupled with what your superiors can make of your potential to successfully deliver what is required of you. In fact, highly motivated and competent officers are known to even make it to the position of General Manager after putting in 14 years of service. Further, given the fact that Indian banks are now present in many countries across the world, as an IBPS PO, you can also aspire to positions in the banks abroad.

An IBPS PO has to undergo a two-year probation period, which may also be less depending on the bank. Following the probation, you will have to clear a confirmation test to be confirmed.

During the probation period, you may be required to perform all kinds of banking tasks to put you through your paces with the banking processes and the general nature of the banking industry.

You may be required to act as a public relations officer, attend to customer complaints such as accounts discrepancies, deficient services, etc. After gaining some experience, you may be required to develop skills and knowledge related to planning, processing, and approval of loans, investment management, etc.

You may be also be required to perform managerial tasks, including supervising clerical staff. You may be also tasked with the issuance of ATM cards, checkbooks, demand drafts, etc.

POs need to multi-task and gain work experience across various departments of the bank with a view to gaining inputs from staff and seniors for managing various departments of the bank such as Finance, Loans, Marketing etc.

The two year probation period is meant to give the young banking professional a close-up, on the job perspective of various banking operations and prepare him/her to take on future responsibilities associated with various positions in the banking sector. During the probation period, the officer will gain valuable insights into different banking operations that will stand him in good stead later through his career.
