Being a commerce student would not be a black mark that would prevent you from ever becoming a game designer. Yet neither would a degree in commerce be a big help in becoming a game designer. Ideally, game designers need to know a little bit about everything: programming, maths, physics, creative writing, technical writing, art, music, history, literature, economics and statistics. You name it.
Most of all, game designers need to understand how to create a game concept that excites people enough to get the project funded; develop the concept into a comprehensive design, including the game's goals, challenges, resources, procedures, rules, levels, content and story (if there is one); communicate that design to the development team (assuming the game is a video game) so that they know what tasks to do; and balance the gameplay so that it is fun to play. Some game designers earn game design or production degrees to learn how to do that; others learn how to do it on their own.
