AKTU is a state-level university that falls under the purview of the state government. It was founded in 2000. It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and has recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Institute of Engineering and Technology, the Faculty of Architecture Lucknow, the Centre for Advanced Studies, and the UP Institute of Design Noida are the four component colleges that make up AKTU at the moment.

The CUET exam is the basis for admission to several UG and PG programs at AKTU; the only entrance exam that AKTU accepts for admission to B.Tech programs is JEE Main. For B.Tech admission, the UPCET test was replaced by JEE Mains. Admission to AKTU's 2024 courses offered at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate levels is determined by a combination of national entrance tests such as CUET, NATA, JEE Main, etc. and the candidate's merit in prior qualifying degrees. AKTU offers the BTech programme at the UG level in various specialisations. The university accepts , followed by the UPTAC Counselling for admission to its BTech programme. To be eligible for AKTU BTech admissions, the candidates must have passed Class 12 from any recognised board with Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry/ Bio-Technology/ Computer Science/ Biology as main subjects.
