Initially, the founder of Dartmouth College - Eleazar Wheelock suggested that the college be called Wentworth in honor of the governer. It was Governor John Wentworth who promised Wheelock (a Congregational minister from Windham, Connecticut, a grant of a township to build the college. However, the governor chose to name it after his friend the Earl of Dartmouth from England.

Dartmouth College was founded by Eleazar Wheelock (a Congregational minister from Connecticut), in 1769. He established the College "for the education and instruction of youth of the Indian tribes in this land. English Youth, and any others." One of Wheelock's the earliest students, Samson Occom, was a Mohegan Indian who played a key role in raising the money required to establish the college.
It is interesting to note that Eleazar Wheelock is a graduate of Yale University.
