Dartmouth University was established in 1769, and is the last institution to receive its charter from the British Crown. A Yale University graduate, Eleazar Wheelock (a Congregational minister from Windham, Connecticut) is the founder of Dartmouth College. It was founded "for the education and instruction of youth of the Indian tribes in this land. English Youth, and any others." Wheelock's relationship with Mohegan Indian Samson Occom is believed to serve as the foundation for the establishment of the college. Occom played a key role in raising the money required to establish the college.

He established the College "for the education and instruction of youth of the Indian tribes in this land. English Youth, and any others." One of Wheelock's the earliest students, Samson Occom, was a Mohegan Indian who played a key role in raising the money required to establish the college.
It is interesting to note that Eleazar Wheelock is a graduate of Yale University.

Interestingly, the university offers gender inclusive housing that is supportive of students who identify as trans, genderqueer, and/or gender non-conforming. Every House Community and Living Learning Community has gender inclusive housing options. Housing assignments in mixed-gender rooms are made on a case by case basis.
