GATE is normally followed by all reputed Universities. Of course some of them have their own exams to admit students. But firstly why no to GATE? Study and appear for it. It will tell you where you stand. Path to good and reputed universities is only through GATE.

Syllabus for GATE is that of graduation. Hence you cannot do much preparation in 2nd year of engineering. However, you will help yourself a great deal if you work hard for your present classes and score consistently more than 75%. This in itself is preparation for GATE.

The admission into ME/M.Tech programs are PSG tech, Coimbatore is based on the GATE scores only. You need to have a GATE score of above 40 so as to have a seat at PSG.
The admission is also via TANCET scores, which are for TN candidates.
However, the GATE scores fill most of the seats.

Firstly and importantly, please remember that no exam is difficult. It's our preparation that matters. Secondly, for GATE syllabus is that of graduation. How will you start preparing for it in 2nd year? My advice firstly concentrates on studying for graduation. After this only prepare for GATE.
