You can attempt one test at the beginning of your preparation under actual test conditions. By doing so, you can get a rough idea about the various sections and the topics in where you are really weak.
Be familiar with the three sections in GRE verbal, quantitative and analytical writing. Each of these sections consists of different types of questions. Equal importance should be given for all the three sections to score high.

I would suggest you to start your preparation from the 2nd year, but you should write it in either 3rd or 4th year because GATE and other exams cover the course of mainly 2nd and 3rd year.
If you are applying for fall, you should take latest by July or even before that, so that after writing it once you can think about a second chance, if not happy with your score, otherwise you start building up your SOP and search for the right place to go.

I am sure by now you would have registered already for GATE 2017. Syllabus for mechanical engineering is also available. Previous year's question papers are also available. You will notice that questions invariably cover complete syllabus. Out of this, you will like some and not like some. But, you must prepare for all. That is the only key to crack this exam.
