Both the exams are difficult and different from each other. Anybody can appear for CAT but GATE is only for engineers for which you need to have sound technical knowledge.

There are no restrictions on the number of times you can appear for GATE entrance examination for any candidate of any category. The scores obtained in a GATE entrance examination is valid only for one year, following which you can appear again for the entrance examination. Ideally, one should start preparing for it from the third year of engineering. GATE syllabus comprises of the same syllabus as of engineering. By the commencement of the third year of engineering, you will already be familiar with a major part of the syllabus. Therefore, you can start your preparation from the third year of engineering. It is recommended to opt for a GATE coaching institute as they help to provide proper guidance. They conduct periodic tests to help you realise your strong and weak sections which will help you figure out where you need to put more focus on.

As per the regulations issued in 2015, admission to any technical courses requires you to qualify in the respective entrance examinations. Apart from GATE entrance examination, there are a lot of other entrance examinations which are comparatively much easier and you can get qualify in them and secure a seat in a good college for chemical engineering. Different states conduct their own entrance examinations for admission into private colleges in a state, for example, OJEE for Odisha, PGECET for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, TANCET for Tamil Nadu, WBUT for West Bengal, etc. Further, some private universities like SRM Unive

The passing cut-off for GATE is 25 Marks. You can appear for other entrance examinations conducted by different states and private universities in India. Further, if this was your first attempt for GATE examination, you can study hard for another year and attempt again in the following year.
