Yes, it is a good choice and rest it depends on how much u can give time to your studies. I believe study hard from books and be thorough with the concepts and go through the pendrive. You can definitely crack GATE! All the best! :)

If you want to prepare for GATE then start studying your 1st year and second year electrical engineering course from now. Also focus more networks engineering and control system questions. These chapters carry more weight age in GATE. Just be thorough with your syllabus of 2nd year and 3 year. Also try to solve previous year question papers. You will get an idea about the questions being asked and look for questions which from 2nd year syllabus.
