The passing cut-off for GATE is 25 marks. For NITs, you need to have at least 50 marks to expect a call. Therefore, based on your marks, I regret to inform you that you are not eligible for admission into any NITs. However, you can appear for other entrance examinations conducted by different states and private universities in India. Further, if this was your first attempt for GATE examination, you can study hard for another year and attempt again in the following year.

Ideally, one should start preparing from the third year of engineering. GATE syllabus comprises of the same syllabus as of engineering. By the commencement of the third year of engineering, you will already be familiar with a major part of the syllabus. Therefore, you can start your preparation from the third year of engineering. It is recommended to opt for a GATE coaching institute as they help to provide proper guidance. They conduct periodic tests to help you realise your string and weak sections which will help you figure out where you need to put more focus on.

I appreciate your risk-taking attitude in regards to your career. Sometimes in life, everyone needs to do that to achieve something even better. s this risk didn't result in a better consequence, I would suggest you to either appear for entrance examinations conducted by various states (like OJEE for Odisha, WBUT for West Bengal, PGECET for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka etc.) and private universities like SRM University, KIIT (Bhubaneshwar), VIT University etc or you can try searching for a job.
