Yes, the following IELTS scores are accepted by the university for different courses:

  • Undergraduate courses: Overall 6.0, minimum 5.5 in each band or equivalent)
  • Master’s course: Overall 6.5, minimum 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in each other bank (or equivalent)
  • Postgraduate research course: Overall 7.0, minimum 6.5 in each band (or equivalent)

No, on the contrary, for the majority of the candidates, the speaking section of IELTS is very scoring. However, with certain rules and a proper strategy candidates can score very high in the IELTS Speaking section.

Northumbria University requires students to submit English language test scores of IELTS, PTE Academic or equivalent. IELTS score requirement for Northumbria University varies from course to course.

  • The range of IELTS score for undergraduate courses is 5.5 – 7.0. Note that for most of the undergraduate programs, IELTS requirement is 6.0
  • For admission to postgraduate taught programs, the IELTS score range is 6.0 – 7.5. For the majority of the postgraduate taught programs, the IELTS score required is 6.5

No, the university Just doesn’t require IELTS as one of its entry requirement criteria. Students can submit any other English proficiency test other than IELTS. However, IELTS is a highly taken English Language test worldwide. Check out the below table for the required scores: 

English Language Proficiency Test 

Minimum score 

IELTS Academic 

A Standard score of 6.0 with no band below 5.5 and with a higher score of 7.0 with no band score below 7. 

TOEFL iBT

An overall standard score of 87, a Minimum of 17 in listening, 18 in reading, 17 in speaking, and 19 in writing. 


And the University also has a higher overall score of 95, with writing 24, listening 22, reading 24, and speaking 25. 

Pearson PTE Academic UKVI 

Overall score of 62, a minimum of 60 in each band. 


And the university has a higher overall score of 76 with no band score less than 76.
